Design Exchange

The Design Exchange (DX) is Canada’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the pursuit of design excellence and preservation of design heritage. Located in the historical Toronto Stock Exchange building of downtown Toronto, the DX annually attracts thousands of visitors of all ages.

Shauna Levy, President of the DX, tasked Bruce Mau Design with designing communication materials for the DX’s 2012 and 2013 annual fundraiser gala, DX Intersection. Supporting DX youth education programs, the gala is one of Toronto’s biggest annual charity events.

For the 2012 gala, BMD created a vibrant collage to communicate the new mandate of the museum.  The collage shows the role that beautifully designed objects play in our everyday lives. Images intersect and overlap to create a multi-purpose pattern, which was applied to different materials and media across print, digital and environments. The 2013 gala was themed as “market”, thus our approach was inspired by patterns and colours from marketplaces around the world, creating a pattern that felt unidentifiable to a singular place, making it exotic and expansive.

In 2013, DX presented a curated exhibition celebrating iconic French shoe designer, Christian Louboutin. The touring exhibition celebrated twenty years of designs and inspiration, revealing the artistry and theatricality of his shoe designs from stilettos to studded sneakers. BMD designed the event collateral for the Toronto exhibit, including printed brochures, banners, city bus advertisements, as well as digital and environmental graphics. At the exhibit, visitors could engage with floor graphics and a shoe-shaped map. The communication materials for the event also aligned to those of DX's 2013 brand communications, which BMD also designed and rolled out.
