Hunter Tura and Amanda Happé bring new course to Kolding, Denmark

Designer as Editor

Hunter Tura, President & CEO, and Amanda Happé, Director of Strategic Design, will teach Designer as Editor, at Design School Kolding in Denmark.

The 20th Century creative model saw the world as a blank page and the designer as an author, inventing ideas from scratch. What is the new role of the designer in a Century thick with content, experiences, and expressions? How do we design with meaning when everything already exists? This two-week workshop embraces the idea of the designer not as a singular author, but as an expert editor. Developed at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, a series of hands-on projects promote a curatorial sensibility that responds to the new world condition.

This course is intended to help designers change their mindset. While students will be "creating," they will also be working with materials that have been authored by someone else. How can you edit existing content to create compelling and differentiated narratives that have lasting impact? The students will engage in a week of exploration using a variety of research tactics, followed by a week focusing on four distinct but interrelated exercises intended to foster "editorial" sensibilities.
